In this episode of the AI & Data Driven Leadership Podcast, Dean Guida, CEO of Slingshotapp.io, interviews Chad Prinkey, Founder and CEO of Well Built Construction Consulting. Chad shares his wealth of knowledge on overcoming common challenges in the construction industry, offering practical advice for business leaders looking to grow, increase profitability, and stay competitive. This conversation highlights how contractors can use strategic planning, financial transparency, and technology to drive success and improve team dynamics.
Chad begins by discussing the key challenges contractors face in today’s construction market. Many contractors struggle with scaling their operations, particularly when transitioning from small businesses to larger firms. Growth aspirations often come with the challenge of managing profitability, as low profit margins are common, especially on large-scale projects. Additionally, even established companies need to find ways to stay competitive and stand out in an increasingly crowded industry. Chad emphasizes that the key to overcoming these hurdles lies in a combination of strategic planning, operational efficiency, and a commitment to continuous learning.
Chad also stresses the importance of financial transparency within construction companies. By openly sharing financial performance data with the team, contractors can foster a sense of accountability and ownership among employees. This transparency helps create a collaborative environment where everyone works toward the company’s goals. Chad also highlights how AI and data are transforming the construction industry. With many contractors facing low win rates on bids, leveraging AI tools to analyze historical data and improve cost estimations can significantly increase accuracy and profitability. By making data-driven decisions, contractors can reduce risks, streamline their operations, and make better-informed choices.
Chad Prinkey’s conversation with Dean offers actionable insights for construction business leaders. Tech entrepreneur and CEO Dean Guida knows there’s a limit to what you can build with grit alone.
At sixteen, Dean bought the first IBM PC and fell in love with writing software. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in operation research from the University of Miami. After graduating, he was a freelance developer and wrote many systems for IBM and on Wall Street. At twenty-three, he started Infragistics to build UX/UI tools for professional software developers.
Seemingly overnight, Dean had to go from early internet coder to business operator—a feat that forced him to learn some of business’s biggest lessons on the job. He immediately began navigating the nuances of scaling a company, hiring and growing teams, and becoming a leader, a manager, and a mentor.
Fast-forward thirty-five years, and Dean’s tech company now has operations in six countries. More than two million developers use Infragistics software, and its client roster boasts 100 percent of the S&P 500, including Fidelity, Morgan Stanley, Exxon, Intuit, and Bank of America.
